2002 RELAY FOR LIFE

Our first year was an amazing event and we far surpassed our original goals. We set a monetary goal of $15,000, 25 survivors, and 10-15 teams. With hard work and the help of so many people we were able to raise $120,000, we had over 80 survivors and 42 teams. That is awesome!!! Many of you, the citizens, church groups, and civic organizations, made us such a success in our first year.

In September 2002, a group of us traveled to Greenville, NC to attend the Relay University offered by the American Cancer Society. This two-day event allowed for group sessions and idea exchanging. By being able to meet with other counties and Relay organizers and volunteers, we were able to bring back information to help make our Relay more successful for the upcoming year.

At the Relay University, our event was recognized for the amount that we raised and we were included in the $100,000 Club. Hillsborough’s event was also awarded the Rookie of the Year Award for the District and for the Southeastern Division. What a great accomplishment for our first year!!

The University organizers even used us as examples in presentations by stating that they wanted to see more “Hillsboroughs” out there. Lori and Shannon were both very shocked when we were presented with these awards.
